Since the late 1950s, when I took my first black and white photograph from a ridge overlooking the Stehekin Valley, photography has been a passion I enjoy to this day. Also a photographer, my great grandfather inspired me to pick up where he left off, attempting to capture the intimacy I feel with this place and to integrate the past with the present. I see the same scenes through my viewfinder that he saw reflected on ground glass, striving to preserve on film a way of life close to the natural world. One of the joys of my work is that I am not merely coming here as a photographer on assignment, then leaving to gain perspective. My perspective comes from within. I’ve lived the life that I am documenting. The old calluses are still there. Although most of my shooting takes place in and around the Stehekin Area, other locations have attracted my eye. There’s always been a special place in my heart for Native Americans and the images shown here were taken on the Colville Indian Reservation in Northeastern Washington. Medium format has been my camera of choice for many years, using an old Mamiya RB67. The simplicity of a manual, non-electronic camera suits my style. 3 lenses, 2 backs, spot meter and tripod make up the bulk of my equipment. Film is always T-max 100 and 400. Before T-max was available I used Plus X and Panatomic X. I do all of my own developing, printing, matting and framing. Frames are mostly Nielson Aluminum or weathered rustic barnboard styles that I manufacture myself. Printing paper is graded, fiberbase Ilford Gallerie. All boards are 100% acid free rag. Glass is Tru-Vue conservation clear with UV protection. All images are protected under the copyright laws. Under these laws we have the right to charge as much as five times the normal rate for images that have been used illegally. The gallery of photographs shown here are but a small part of my archives.
